OBAMA LAST NIGHT, EVENTS + MORE!!

Dear Friends,

Were you one of the 38 million who tuned into Obama's speech last night? WOW. Needless to say, we support his message. That's why we're reading his book in Book Club, and on Saturday, October 4th, we'll be having a super special event to further the cause... More info on this TBA but we're really psyched to be part of this awesome grassroots effort. Sweat already has voter registration forms available and due to popular demand any day now we'll have cool Obama/Biden buttons, stickers and magnets so you can show your support.

Moving on!! Thanks to everyone who came out to the Wholphin screening, Pure Imagination, and last night's BATTLE OF THE BANDS at MOCA!! All events were great and big congrats to last night's audience-selected winners, THE ELECTRIC BUNNIES. Pick up their 7" at Sweat Records today!!

Tonight at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND we present a special live performance by RAVELSTEIN!! This multi-instrumental indie/post-punk group has been rocking weekly at "Can You Rock A Little Softer?" and tonight is their Vagabond debut - showtime is midnight outside. Additionally, our friend VJ CHRIS VIDEO will be mixing up your favorite new and classic videos in the Garden. No cover before midnight so come on out!!

We're still having Music Movie Monday (AMERICAN HARDCORE!) this week even though it's Labor Day. We'll be opening at 6pm for the screening at 8. AND... don't forget next Saturday the 6th, is Sweat's massive "WALL OF IDOLATRY" Mural Unveiling Party!! There will be music, kegs, cupcakes and good times!! PURE IMAGINATION LIVE This Saturday!!

Thankfully Fay passed over without too much hassle - the last thing Sweat needs is another hurricane!!

To celebrate, tonight at The Vagabond we present a special live performance by SWAMP VALVE!! A side project of Miami favorites The Down Home Southernaires, Swamp Valve's upbeat indie pop will have you dancing - listen up at myspace.com/swampvalve. Showtime is midnight outside.

Tomorrow night we are so damn excited to present the return of PURE IMAGINATION LIVE!! The first 2 events at Sweat were magical nights of stories, music and good people. Additionally, Raffa (of Raffa & Rainer) will be making her super-delicious famous vegan chili!! Only $5 gets you dinner and the entertainment's free so there is no reason to miss this!!

Tonight at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND we've got a special live performance by AIRSHIP ROCKETSHIP!! A veritable supergroup of local musicians from other projects, Airship Rocketship will be playing their smooth new-wavey pop in the Garden at midnight. Check them out at myspace.com/airshiprocketship. At BACK DOOR BAMBY Saturday at Vagabond there is a tribute to Mr. Elvis Aaron Presley who left this earth 31 years ago to the day!! Come in your '50s garb and get ready to shake your pelvis for Elvis...there's even going to be a professional impersonator!!

The SWEAT BOOKS Book Club met a few days ago which means we've got a new selection!! In keeping with the times, we'll be reading "The Audacity of Hope" by presidential candidate BARACK OBAMA!! Copies are available at Books & Books, and online for as little as $5. Read what the man has to say in his own words and meet with us to discuss it on Wednesday, October 8th at 8pm. Be there AND be square...

Monday night is the WHOLPHIN SPECIAL EDITION of MUSIC MOVIE MONDAYS!! Wholphin is the DVD Magazine brought to you by the folks at esteemed yet silly literary journal McSweeney's (founded by Dave Eggers, author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" - a previous Sweat Books selection). Films will include an animated short about a fake rock star taking on a heroin-addicted carnival monkey, Scottish 9-year-olds singing "Satan Rocks" at their country fair, Patton Oswald and David Byrne!! Seating is at 8pm and the flicks start at 8.30pm sharp. Read some awesome advance press HERE.

Wednesday, we've got a special musical treat. Uber-collector and DJ SOULMANJAN will be presenting some selections from his incredible collection of rare Northern Soul 45s!! Some of these vintage records are worth thousands of dollars a piece so come hear some original soul music that hasn't been sampled... yet!! Starts at 8pm.

Last but not least, on Saturday, September 6th we're having a giant party at Sweat to officially unveil the amazing "WALL OF IDOLATRY" mural that CP1 has been working on all summer!! There will be a show of canvas art by CP1 in the store, DJs, kegs, cupcakes and more!! Please mark your calendars and join us to celebrate this Sweat milestone.

We just got a great write-up this week in the Herald!! In Thursday's Food section they featured 3 outstanding independent coffee houses in Miami and Sweat is one of them!! So come by our shop and have a delicious, hand-crafted beverage - our espresso is to die for, we stock organic soy, rice and cow milk, and are getting a brand new batch of Earthcakes Vegan Cupcakes tonight!! Tonight - 08.08.08 - is a special date with lots of cool things to do!!

Early on, check out the biennial DIXIE DINGO SUPER 8 FILM FESTIVAL at the Dorsch Gallery!! There will be experimental Super 8 films and music spun by yours truly. It starts at 8:08:08pm!!

Later on, we have a VERY special FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND tonight with a live performance by Joy Division tribute band 3 ONE G!! We've brought them down from Winter Park and they'll be playing all your favorite Joy Division tracks. We're having them play inside (so it's darker!) and they're going on EARLY at 11pm so don't sleep on this!!

VAGABOND Back in Action Tonight w/ RIMSKY!!

Dear Friends,

As you may have heard, we had some technical difficulties at Vagabond last week but we are back in action tonight!!

This FRIDAY AT THE VAGABOND we welcome a special live performance by RIMSKY of HUMBERT!! Showtime is midnight in the garden and is preceded and followed by our awesome resident and guest DJs spinning the good stuff. Additionally, because we had to close early last week we're giving everyone FREE ADMISSION ALL NIGHT!! Arrive early to avoid the huge lines we had last week!!

We're also stoked to let you know that tomorrow is the annual ROCK THE BELLS show at Bayfront!! We went last year and it was a blast - tons of people and good vibes all coming together for the love of hip hop. It was a beautiful thing and this year is sure to pop off with so many amazing headliners including A Tribe Called Quest, Method Man & Redman, Dead Prez, The Pharcyde, Nas, De La Soul, Mos Def, and more!!

Last but not least, this MUSIC MOVIE MONDAY we'll be showing DEPECHE MODE 101 (1989)!! The film documents their 1988 US tour and also features their entire legendary show at the Rose Bowl. A must for any DM or 80s music fan, seating is at 8pm, the flick starts at 8.30.
