Benefits, In-Stores + More!!

Dear friends,

Last night's Sweat Benefit Show at Churchill's was AMAZING!! Thanks so much to all the bands and everyone who helped spread the word and came out. Tons of you took advantage of our great deal to "Buy-yourself-a-CD-and-get-in-free-next-door" so we hope you all love what you bought!! We'll be getting a fancy alarm system and a new fish tank sooner than later dammit!!

We are having another concert to raise funds next Thursday, October 2nd at The Vagabond!! *SWEAT-AID* will feature live performances by Miami favorites THE JEANMARIE, THE JACUZZI BOYS, PRETTY PLEASE and JOSE EL REY, plus DJs and other surprises!! Cover is only $5 and all proceeds go to the shop. We're doing the same deal to get in for this one too - come into Sweat and grab yourself any new CD, LP, DVD or book and we'll put you on the guest list for this awesome show.

We're trying our hardest to get Sweat back to being the fully-functional, multi-purpose, all-ages community event space that it was before all our stuff got stolen and we are SO appreciative of everyone who is helping to get us there. We've gotten so many awesome emails from South Florida and around the world about what happened and we're writing everyone back as fast as we can.

Speaking of helping...last week at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND, we collected a massive MOUNTAIN of stuff to send to Haitian hurricane victims!! Thanks to everyone who showed up and brought goods. Tonight at The Vagabond, we've got your favorite residents DJs and a live performance by rockabilly punks VIVALEVOX!! Show time is midnight in the Garden. Great article about Fridays and Vivalevox here: Vivalevox Live Tomorrow Night at The Vagabond

Also early tonight is an in-store at Sweat featuring DESERTER and LIL DAGGERS. Tomorrow night there's another great in-store featuring locals SIRENS & SEALIONS, NICK DELUCA, MICHELLE BLADES and POSTMAIL!! Read what the New Times has to say about it here: Sirens & Sealions

Much love,
Lolo, Jsin and the Sweat crew

Happier News from Sweat Records!!

Dear friends,

It has been quite a week!! Lots to mention so please read on...

We've posted pictures from the aftermath in blogs on our myspace - myspace.com/sweatrecords. Coralmorphologic managed to resuscitate some of the lovely discosoma corals, the porcelain crab, and the 2 harlequin serpent stars so that's nice!!

We had a cleaning party Monday night (many, many thanks to everyone who showed up and gave elbow grease) and opened back up Tuesday for our new monthly CASA DE HA-HA comedy night which was FANTASTIC!! Listen up folks - in addition to having tons of talented artists and musicians, Miami's got some seriously hilarious up-and-coming comedians - we laughed away the weekend's stress all night. Sweat was packed, it was definitely one of our best in-stores yet, and the next Casa is Tuesday, October 14th so mark your calendars.

Besides that the outpouring of support has been beyond amazing. We bust our butts year-round to bring Miami cool events, comprehensive show listings, and support for local culture and it's so touching to know that it is appreciated. Giant, massive, squishy thanks to everyone who's sent nice emails, written articles/blog posts/bulletins, donated time, cash, or equipment, and sent us positive thoughts. We love you back!!

There are a couple benefit shows coming up and we are so thankful - Churchill's is putting one together on Sunday, and then Thursday the 25th at Churchill's, come out for SWEAT RELIEF featuring live performances by JESSE JACKSON, ANIMALS OF THE ARCTIC, RAFFA & RAINER, THE DOWN HOME SOUTHERNAIRES and RACHEL GOODRICH!! *UPDATE* Just added: DINO FELIPE, ELECTRIC BUNNIES, LITTLE BEARD and TEE PEE!! Big ups to Jesse and the Animals for putting this together for us.

However, we are surely not the only ones who need help. Tonight at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND, Sweat Records, the New Times, and The Vagabond are having a food/clothing/goods drive to benefit hurricane victims in Haiti!! Sadly, Afrobeta had to cancel at the last minute but we'll be bringing you the same great Friday night dance party as always and we've got CHRIS VIDEO mixing your favorite music videos in the Garden!! So go through your pantries and closets, bring some items and get in for free all night, otherwise there's a $5 cover from 11pm on. It's Little Haiti helping Big Haiti tonight!!

Also, tomorrow at Vagabond HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR (DFA) are doing a special DJ set!! Their tracks are hot and the CD is Sweat's #1 best-seller at the moment so don't miss it. $10 pre-sale tickets are at www.wantickets.com

Coming up...

Sunday night the Black Mangrove Collective is hosting an in-store at Sweat featuring emcee OLMECA (LA) along with locals Laguardia, Ephniko and the Write Side Poets!! Fans of hip hop and spoken word should check this out fo sho.

We've been lent a projector so this week's Music Movie Mondays features ONCE - a simple, beautiful music movie and love story about a busker in Ireland meeting an unlikely collaborator. It won an Oscar for the music and the soundtrack is a new classic so come out!! Seating is at 8.30pm and as a reminder, movie night is free.

By the way, we are still also an awesome coffee shop and record store!! Come in for organic lattes and new releases from Kings of Leon, Mogwai, TV on the Radio, Fleet Foxes, Cold War Kids, Raphael Saadiq, Thievery Corporation, Islands, Brightblack Morning Light, and many more. Our temporary hours are 6PM TO MIDNIGHT MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY until we get a little more settled.

Much love,
Lolo, Jsin and the Sweat crew

Some Sad News from Sweat Records

Dear Sweat friends and family,

We are writing you today with some very sad news.

Last night Sweat was broken into, robbed and vandalized. The unknown assailants stole everything worth stealing and needlessly trashed this place that we've put so much into. Our store computer, credit card terminal, video projector, entire DJ/sound setup, cash drawer and more are gone.

Most of these items can be replaced, however the truly worst part of all is that our beloved saltwater reef tank was found destroyed - smashed and knocked to the ground. Colin and Jared at Coralmorphologic who maintained and gave life to the tank came by to salvage what they could, but it was not pretty. Also on the irreplaceable list are about 8 pieces of art from the store's personal collection. No one was hurt though and for that we are truly thankful.

It has been a heartbreaking 24 hours for us over here but if you know one thing about Sweat Records, it's that we don't give up. Hurricanes can't keep us down, so we'll get through this too. Of course it sucks, but it's just going to make us work harder to make Miami even better and worthy of all the awesome people who live here.

We've already had offers of donations and are so extremely thankful. If you do wanna chip in toward the recovery (and future improvement of our security system, among other things) we have a paypal account under this address - info@sweatrecordsmiami.com and we've put a button for it on our myspace and website.

Since we are currently projector-less, this week's Music Movie Monday is postponed. We'll show MOOG another night and hopefully by the time next week's movie rolls around we'll have a temp projector or replacement. We'll keep you posted.

However, TUESDAY night's show will go on!! We're borrowing a mic and an amp and our brand-new comedy night - CASA DE HA-HA - will debut as planned. Daniel's got a great variety of local and working comedians lined up so come out for the start of this new monthly happening. The thieves left the espresso machine and the microwave so we'll have drinks, popcorn and treats. Starts at 9pm!!

Besides that the store will have sporadic hours this week so if you're going to stop by please call first - 305.758.5862 extension 5.

Much love as always,
Lolo, Jsin, Dan, Jeff, Deuce and the whole Sweat familia

LA RIOTS, EARTHDANCE + CASA DE HA-HA!!

Dear Friends,

Thanks to everyone who came out to our mural unveiling fiesta last Saturday!! It was a blast and there are some pics from it up at www.miami.com/nightlife/sweat-records. Not only was the party awesome, but the next day IGGY POP HIMSELF came by Sweat and we got to show him his face on our wall!!!!!! It was a music geek dream-come-true...

Tonight at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND we've got a super special guest DJ set from LA RIOTS!! These guys have played with and remixed everyone in the game (Justice, Hot Chip, James Murphy, etc. etc. etc.) and they'll be rocking our dance floor and awesome sound system tonight!! We highly suggest you arrive early to avoid the lines!!

Tomorrw night is Gallery Walk including our friend FEDERICO NESSI's opening at Spinello Gallery!! At 9pm there will be a special performance featuring Nessi and members of The Electric Bunnies, Animals of the Arctic, Dance, Jenny and more!! Also peep Clifton Childree's show at Locust Projects and mosey around because every gallery in the the hood will be open and flossing their latest shows...

Also tomorrow, which we're sure you've heard about already, is EARTHDANCE MIAMI 2008!! It's one of over 350 parties happening simultaneously around the globe. The Miami edition is stacked with amazing local talent - live music and DJs (including our own Mike Deuce), plus performance art, visual art, installations, eco-friendly presentations, good, drink and more!! For $10 reserved entry, email earthdancemiami@gmail.com - otherwise it's $20 at the door - still a bargain!!

On to next week... MUSIC MOVIE MONDAY features MOOG about analog synthesizer pioneer Dr. Robert Moog, and Tuesday night brings us Sweat's first ever comedy event!! Come out for CASA DE HA-HA hosted by my brother DANIEL RESKIN!! I know I'm biased, but tons of other people not sharing DNA with him think he's pretty damn hilarious. Come out for Dan, lots of other great local stand-ups, and comedy talk/films/etc. after the performances.

Cheers,
Lolo, Jsin + the Sweat crew

P.S. Extra huge show listings to make up for last week!! Did you know that David Sedaris, The Faint and Henry Rollins are all coming to South Florida? Read on...

BARACK 'N' ROLL BAKE SALE + VOTER REGISTRATION RALLY on Saturday, October 4th at Sweat!!

The last day to register to vote in this year's election is Monday, October 6th so we're doing our part to register as many people as possible before then. In fact, we've got forms at the store right this minute. More info on this event soon but it's going to be huge. If you want to get involved, email us!!

This week's MUSIC MOVIE MONDAY features indie biopic THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON!! It's really a fantastic film and we recommend it highly. Thanks to everyone who's been coming out.

The full event listings will be updated on our site shortly so check it out during the week to see what else is coming up musically and otherwise throughout the tri-county area. Next weekend brings excitingness like LA RIOTS at Fridays at The Vagabond, Gallery Walk (including our friend FEDERICO NESSI's solo show at Spinello Gallery) and EARTHDANCE MIAMI 2008 at Soho Studios!!

Cheers,
Lolo, Jsin + the Sweat crew
