A.K.A. Tonight + Super Saturday!!

Dear Friends,

Tonight at FRIDAYS AT THE VAGABOND we're happy to have a special live performance by feisty female-fronted powerpop trio A.K.A.!! Voted "Best Girl Band" by the New Times, come and rock out to them as well as our excellent resident DJs until 5 in the morning!! Free admission and $1 Stella and PBR before midnight as always. We've got a ton of other awesome bands lined up for Fridays through August so check it out below or on Sweat's myspace page.

Tomorrow there's a ton going on!!

For the early risers, Miami's CRITICAL MASS celebrates it's 2-YEAR ANNIVERSARY!! They're meeting at 10am at the South Miami Metro-Rail Station (5848 S. Dixie Hwy) and will be riding through the Grove and stopping to picnic at Peacock Park. Congrats to them!!

Later on at the MOCA, there's a screening of WILD COMBINATION: A PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR RUSSELL!! "A visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde, singer-songwriter, cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell, who was a leading figure in the music and art scene of New York in the 1970s and 1980s," the film showcases a true underground talent whose music is timeless (and has sold over and over again at Sweat)!! The screening starts at 2pm and is free with museum admission.

Then Saturday night it's Gallery Walk, and then head north because our block is popping with rad events at Sweat AND Churchill's!! At Sweat, we welcome back CALL IT RADAR from their tour with a homecoming in-store featuring them, THE DOWN HOME SOUTHERNAIRES, LION BOY and ROTAGILLA!! The bands start at 8pm and it should be awesome. Next door... the MIAMI LAPTOP BATTLE 2008 is onnn with 12 of Miami's finest musical data manipulators duking it out electronically to be crowned the master!! Last year Otto Von Schirach won and he returns this year as the celebrity judge. Expect the unexpected... doors at 9pm.

Then on Monday night MUSIC MOVIE MONDAYS continues with a screening of THE COMMITMENTS!! The Commitments (1991, UK) is a hilarious and sweet film about an unlikely group of young Dubliners set on starting a true R&B/soul band in 90s Ireland. This classic film used real unknown actors and musicians including Glen Hansard, who went on to start the band The Frames and won an Oscar last year for his gorgeous movie "ONCE" (which will definitely be featured at Music Movie Mondays in the future)!! Seating is at 8pm and the film starts promptly at 8.30. Popcorn and snacks are available and of course everyone is invited to stay and discuss the film afterward.

Have a great weekend!!

Cheers,
Lolo, Jsin + the Sweat crew
